Thayer Trellis

Tom Thayer’s outdoor patio was sorely underutilized. The south-facing sun exposure provided too much heat and glare for comfort during the daytime. The lack of patio heaters and lighting hampered its use during our cool Santa Barbara evenings. The patio space was just not conducive to outdoor living.

We explored many initial design concepts that evolved into a perfect design solution: a cantilevered steel and wood trellis structure that fits perfectly with both Tom’s needs and his contemporary style home. The trellis diffuses the daylight sun, eliminating heat and glare while creating beautiful ever-changing light patterns throughout the day. Integrated patio heaters and lighting provide a warm and comfortable outdoor living space, even on the coolest winter evenings. The “waterfall” trellis shelter creates an inviting, intimate outdoor living space. The patio space has become an integral part of Tom’s home and the way he lives and entertains. It has been transformed from one of his least used to one of his most used living spaces: a true sign of our design success.
