Traditional Homes
Santa Barbara Beach Residence
The owners had a large program, but a pretty simple wish – to create a casually classic beach home that would feel cozy for a simple weeknight dinner for two in front of the TV, and also accommodate much larger family gatherings and formal events. And they didn’t want anyone to ever feel they couldn’t kick off their shoes and curl up on the sofa, even if there was a little sand involved. We kept the materials and colors simple and clean in an effort to maintain the “California cottage” style despite the rambling nature of the house. The details are traditional, but this home integrates the latest smart-home technologies to provide all the creature comforts of modern living. And we took advantage of every corner of the 4+ acre bluff-top property, creating expansive as well as private outdoor areas that slowly reveal themselves as you wander the grounds – the outdoors really becomes an extension of the home.
The center, 2-story wing of the home contains all of the main living and entertaining spaces. Either side of the living spaces are the family bedroom wing for the owners' three sons, and flanked on the opposite side by a spacious 2-bedroom guest suite with it's own living area and wet bar. A substantial basement area houses all of the mechanical systems for the home, as well as a wine cellar and some seasonal storage.
In every aspect, NMA exceeded our expectations and were, in our opinion, ideal creative partners for this project.
